Ingredients for Steak Fried Rice Recipe
Wondering how to season steak for fried rice? A simple mixture of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil ties the whole dish together.

- Cooked rice (preferably day-old): Key to getting that classic fried rice texture without it being mushy
- Steak (ribeye, sirloin, or leftover steak): Adds rich, hearty flavor and protein
- Eggs: Brings texture and that classic fried rice element
- Soy sauce: The base of that savory, umami flavor
- Onions & Mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, etc.): Adds color, texture, and a little freshness
- Green onions: Fresh finish and a pop of flavor

Pro Tip For Steak Fried Rice
- Use cold, day-old rice for the best texture
- Cook steak separately first to avoid overcooking
- Use high heat to get that authentic fried rice flavor
- Don’t overcrowd the pan; cook the fried rice in batches if needed
- Let the rice sit for a minute before stirring to get crispy edges
- Add a little butter at the end for extra flavor (hibachi style)

Substitutions
- Steak: Flank steak is another option.
- Sauce: Instead of oyster sauce or fish sauce, you can use hoisin sauce.
- Protein: You can use this recipe to make shrimp fried rice, chicken fried rice, or beef fried rice.
Variations
- Ginger: Add ginger powder or grate fresh ginger for a pop of zesty flavor with peppery undertones.
- Rice: This recipe works with any type of leftover rice including brown rice or jasmine rice; just make sure it’s day old.
- Spicy: Kick the spiciness up a notch by adding sriracha.
- Garnish: Sesame seeds add a toasted nutty flavor.
- Veggies: Frozen veggies work best for a meal that’s ready in less than 30 minutes but you can use fresh vegetables if that’s what you have.

FAQ
What is the secret to good fried rice?
Make the best steak fried rice with day old rice. The lack of moisture allows it to warm up without getting soggy or clumping up.
How do you reheat steak without making it tough?
The key to reheating steak is to cook it just until warmed through. Add it to an already hot pan so it warms up quicker. Then allow it to rest briefly before serving for optimal flavor and tenderness. Some recipes use baking soda or baking powder but it isn’t necessary when you use this method.
How long is leftover steak good for in the fridge?
When properly stored, leftover steak can last 3-4 days. It’s important to refrigerate it promptly and use airtight containers to maintain freshness. Consider freezing it for an extended shelf life so you can use it in recipes for leftover steak.
Pairing
These are my favorite dishes to serve with this fried rice with steak recipe:
Quick and Easy Steak Fried Rice
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil for cooking
- 1 lb Leftover sirloin or ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 3 cups Cooked and chilled rice, best if made a day ahead
- 2 cups Mixed vegetables, carrots, peas, corn, and diced bell peppers
- 3 Green onions, chopped
- 3 cloves Garlic, minced
- 2 Eggs, beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
Fried Rice Sauce
- 3 tablespoons Soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Oyster sauce, or fish sauce
- 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
- 1/2 tablespoon Brown sugar, optional but recommended
Instructions
- 1. Prep Ingredients: Ensure all your ingredients are chopped, sliced, and ready to go. Having everything prepared in advance will make the cooking process smooth.
- 2. Cook the Steak: Heat a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Sear the sliced steak for 1-2 minutes per side until heated through. Remove the steak from the pan and set it aside.
- 3. Cook Vegetables: In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Stir-fry the minced garlic and mixed vegetables until they are tender-crisp.
- 4. Add Rice: Add the chilled cooked rice to the pan. Break up any clumps and stir-fry with the vegetables until well combined.
- 5. Push Rice to the Side: Push the rice and vegetables to one side of the pan, creating an empty space. Pour the beaten eggs into the empty space and scramble them until cooked through.
- 6. Combine Ingredients: Once the eggs are cooked, mix them with the rice and vegetables.
- 7. Add Soy Sauce and Oyster Sauce: Mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and brown sugar in a bowl. Then drizzle the sauce over the rice mixture. Stir well to combine.
- 8. Add Steak and Green Onions: Add the cooked steak slices and chopped green onions to the pan. Stir everything together until the steak is evenly distributed and the green onions are mixed in.
- 9. Season and Serve: Taste the fried rice and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Continue to stir-fry for a few more minutes until everything is heated through.
- 10. Serve Hot: Transfer the steak fried rice to a serving dish and serve hot and enjoy!
