Steak and potatoes are a classic family meal of epic proportions. Instead of a huge slab of steak and baked potatoes, everything is chopped down to bite-size pieces. It's full of garlicky, herby, mouthwatering flavor that will have you reaching for seconds!
Why You Will Love This Steak and Potatoes Recipe:
Convenient! I love meals cooked in one pan because there is less to clean up. With steak, potatoes, and some simple seasoning, this meal comes together quickly and easily in one large skillet. Cooking steak has never been easier!
A Family Favorite! No one opposes when I set this down on the dinner table. If you have picky eaters, this is a go-to choice because everyone loves this steak and potato skillet!
Flavorful! These marinated steak bites are melt-in-your-mouth tender. The potatoes are seasoned and cooked to perfection, with a crispy coating and soft, fluffy center. This is definitely a treat for your taste buds!
Ingredients you need:
- Steaks: The steak should be about 1 inch thick.
- Potatoes: washed, peeled, and cubed
- Oil: Use avocado oil or olive oil.
- Garlic cloves: Mince fresh garlic for the best results.
- Seasoning: I use seasoned salt for potatoes and add salt and pepper to taste.
- Herbs: Add dried thyme.
The Best Steak to Use:
Use a good quality steak that cooks quickly. Here are my suggestions.
- Flat iron steak: This is from the shoulder of the cow. It has a rich, beefy flavor.
- Ribeye steak: This has excellent flavor due to the marbled fat that melts down when cooked.
- Top sirloin steak: This affordable, lean cut of meat comes from the top portion of the cow.
- Beef tenderloin: Filet mignon is the most tender cut of steak. It has a buttery texture.
- New York strip steak: This comes from the short loin section of the cow. It is chewy with a bold, beefy flavor.
The Best Potatoes to Use:
- Yukon gold potatoes: Use this for a rich, buttery texture.
- Baby potatoes and red potatoes: These waxy potatoes do well under heat.
How to Make Steak and Potatoes:
Action
Add 1 tablespoon of avocado oil or olive oil to a preheated cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Then allow it to come to a simmer (about 30 seconds to 1 minute).
Add your cleaned and cubed potatoes into the skillet and sprinkle with seasoned salt.
Use a spatula to toss them in the skillet in order to distribute the seasoning evenly. Let them cook for 3-5 minutes, then flip them over and cook an additional 3 minutes.
Remove the potatoes from the skillet and set them aside in a large bowl.
Generously season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides. Then add the remaining olive oil or avocado oil into the skillet over medium high heat.
Place the steaks in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare steak, or adjust the cooking time based on your preferred doneness. Once cooked to your liking, remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside to rest.
While the steaks are resting, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the butter, minced garlic, and dried thyme to the skillet. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, stirring constantly to prevent burning.
Add the potatoes back into the skillet and stir them into the butter sauce, then move them to one side of the skillet.
Slice the steaks against the grain into thin pieces. Add the steak back into the skillet and toss them in the sauce to coat. Serve while hot, and enjoy!
Alternatives and Variations:
- Fat: Instead of oil you could use a combination of oil and unsalted butter. I do not recommend cooking solely with butter because the garlic butter steak and potatoes are likely to burn. And as the butter burns, it takes on a bitter taste.
- Fresh Herbs: Try rosemary, basil, or fresh thyme instead of dried thyme.
- Steak and Mashed Potatoes: If you do not need a one pan meal, you can swap the fried potatoes for mashed potatoes instead. Try my Creamy Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole recipe.
Pro-Tips for the Best Steak and Potatoes:
- If you use a lower quality cut of steak like skirt steak or flank steak, definitely marinate them first so they are not tough and chewy.
- Do not use starchy potatoes like russet potatoes for this skillet recipe. It will have a gritty texture and fall apart.
- Always add steak to a hot skillet. You want to hear that sizzle as soon as you place them on the surface. This sears the steak, for a nice caramelization. It also prevents the meat from sticking to the skillet.
- Avoid overcrowding the pan or the steak and potatoes will be steamed and soggy.
- Allow the steak to rest after cooking to your desired doneness. This allows the juices to redistribute. If you slice too soon, the steak will be dry and tough.
What goes with Steak and Potatoes?
- Shrimp: While the steak and potatoes are cooking, pop some shrimp in the air fryer for steak, shrimp, and potatoes.
- Veggies: For a more balanced meal, consider adding green beans, broccoli, or caramelized onions.
Storing and Reheating:
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For longer storage, add it to the freezer for up to 3 months. You can reheat it in the microwave, on the stove in a skillet, or in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes. If frozen, thaw it in the fridge overnight.
FAQ:
Is it good to eat steak with potatoes?
Studies show that consuming steak with potatoes is actually healthier than eating red meat alone because carbs are good for digestion. So enjoy this steak and potatoes recipe as part of a balanced diet!
Can you cook potatoes and meat at the same time?
Yes but potatoes take longer to cook than steak so for this recipe, it is best to prepare the potatoes first. This also allows the steak extra time to marinate.
Why are my potatoes undercooked?
Ensure your potatoes are cut into small enough pieces to cook faster. If your potatoes are taking longer than anticipated, add 2 tablespoons of water and cover the skillet for about 3 minutes or until the water evaporates. That should do the trick!
