What is Sheet Pan Pizza?
Sheet pan pizza is an easy one pan meal made on a baking pan or baking sheet instead of a pizza stone. It is assembled just like a traditional pizza but it has a rectangular shape, similar to Detroit-style pizza.
Ingredients
- Cornmeal: This is a genius way to ensure the pizza crust does not stick to the pan.
- Pizza dough: You can use homemade pizza dough or just use store- bought.
- Buffalo sauce: Use your favorite sauce. I like Sweet Baby Ray's Mild Buffalo Wing Sauce because it is the perfect amount of heat without being too spicy for the kids. Frank's is another good choice for that classic flavor.
- Cheese: I use a combination of shredded mozzarella cheese and cheddar cheese.
- Chicken: Use precooked, shredded chicken breast.
- Seasoning: I season the chicken with seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
- Ranch dressing: Either use this to drizzle on the buffalo chicken pizza or dip pizza slices into it.
How to Make Buffalo Chicken Pizza
See recipe card for ingredient quantities and full instructions.
Prep Your Pan and Dough
First, preheat your oven to 400ºF to get it ready for baking. Sprinkle some cornmeal on a large sheet pan (18” x 26”) and spread it around to prevent sticking while giving the crust a nice texture. Place your pizza dough directly on the sheet pan and stretch it out so it’s completely flat, with the edges slightly coming up the sides of the pan.
Apply Buffalo Chicken Pizza Sauce
Spread 1 cup of buffalo sauce evenly over the dough. I like using the back of a spoon or a ladle to get a smooth, even layer. This sauce brings the heat and gives the pizza its signature tangy flavor.
Season and Add the Chicken
In a small bowl, mix the cooked and shredded chicken with seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Give it a good toss to ensure every piece is coated in flavor.
Pile on the Cheese
Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the pizza first, letting it melt into the buffalo sauce. Then, add the seasoned chicken and top everything with shredded cheddar cheese for an extra layer of gooey goodness.
Bake Sheet Pan Pizza
Place the sheet pan in the oven and cook the pizza for 18-20 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through the cooking time.
Remove the pizza from the oven and drizzle with ranch dressing, or serve it on the side for dipping. Finally, enjoy!
Pro Tips for the Best Buffalo Chicken Pizza
- Use a light dusting of cornmeal. It prevents the dough from sticking to the sheet pan while adding a slightly crisp texture to the crust.
- Stretch the pizza dough evenly across the sheet pan. Make sure to press it into the corners and up the sides slightly for the perfect base.
- Season the chicken well. Mixing the chicken with seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper ensures flavorful bites in every slice.
- Rotate the pan halfway through baking. This helps the crust cook evenly and prevents any spots from overbaking.
- Let the pizza cool slightly before cutting. This allows the cheese and toppings to set, making it easier to slice without a mess.
- Customize the toppings to your taste. Add extras like diced onions, jalapeños, or even crumbled blue cheese for more flavor.
Storage
Wrap leftover buffalo chicken pizza in aluminum foil and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat leftovers in the oven or air fryer at 400ºF for 5-7 minutes or until warmed through.
Alternatives and Variations
- Sauce: Instead of ranch dressing, you can drizzle the buffalo chicken pizza with blue cheese.
- Veggies: Add red onions or bell peppers for a pop of fresh flavor.
- Cheese: You can use provolone cheese instead.
FAQ
Does buffalo chicken pizza have tomato sauce?
Buffalo chicken pizza doesn’t usually have tomato sauce. Instead, it uses buffalo sauce as the base, for a fiery, tangy kick. In my recipe, the buffalo sauce completely replaces the need for traditional tomato sauce.
How do you keep a sheet pan pizza from sticking?
To keep a sheet pan pizza from sticking, sprinkle a light layer of cornmeal on the pan before adding the dough. The cornmeal not only prevents sticking but also gives the crust a nice, crisp texture. You can also use parchment paper.
How many people does a sheet pan pizza feed?
This recipe uses a full sheet pan (18” x 26”) which yields 8 large slices of pizza. So this sheet pan buffalo chicken pizza can easily feed 3-4 people. To feed more people, simply double up and make two pizzas.
