Egg roll in a bowl is one of those meals that was inspired by the craving for Chinese food. Instead of ordering takeout, we used what we had on hand, and voila: EGGROLL IN A BOWL happened and it is my new favorite quick meal!
This great recipe is a huge hit in my household and I am positive it will be in yours too!
Why We Love This Egg Roll in a Bowl Recipe:
Flavorful! The flavor profiles that happened in that bowl were nothing short of amazing. The whole family loves this one -- even my picky eaters!
Healthy Alternative! This keto egg roll in a bowl takes everything you love about the classic Asian staple minus carbs from the greasy deep-fried egg roll wrappers.
Easy Prep! This is a quick one skillet meal that is ready in just 30 minutes, with just 15 minutes of cooking time. It stores and reheats well so it is also good for meal prep.
Ingredients you need:
- Ground Beef: Ground pork is traditionally used in egg rolls but I used ground beef in order to make it a bit healthier.
- Carrots: Shred this veggie before cooking. It adds colors and a nice crunch.
- Cabbage: Use a premade coleslaw mix for an even quicker meal.
- Three Pepper Blend: This is my personal addition for added spice, flavor and color.
- Hoison Sauce: This thick, sweet and salty sauce brings all the other flavors together.
- Seasoning: Use ground garlic (or fresh garlic, minced), grated fresh ginger (ground ginger in a pinch), black pepper and crushed red pepper flakes.
- Sesame Seeds: I use this to garnish.
How to Make Egg Roll in a Bowl:
First you cook the ground beef and frozen pepper trio. Once cooked through, drain the excess grease and add the meat back to the skillet.
Next, add thinly sliced cabbage and carrots to the same skillet.
Cook cabbage down until it is soft and appears almost translucent, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
Add seasonings, ginger, garlic, and hoisin sauce, and mix well.
Enjoy this egg roll in a bowl as a side dish, or eat it as a main meal!
Alternatives and Variations:
- Ground Meat: Swap out the ground beef for any protein you prefer. Try ground turkey, ground pork, or ground chicken.
- Cooking Sauce: I use hoisin sauce because it is more flavorful than soy sauce but you can use it if that is what you have. You will need to add sugar if you are trying to replicate the flavor of hoisin sauce. (And if salt intake is a concern, opt for low-sodium soy sauce instead.) For a soy-free alternative, use coconut aminos.
- More Flavor: Although no oil is necessary for this recipe, you can add a tablespoon of toasted sesame oil for a nutty taste that adds more depth.
- Extra Veggies: Want more than shredded cabbage? Add green onions, bean sprouts, and broccoli slaw.
- More Sauce: Once the egg roll bowl is ready, add a mouthwatering sauce. A drizzle of spicy mayo, hot sauce, duck sauce, or sweet chili sauce is the perfect finishing touch.
Storing and Reheating:
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Egg roll in a bowl reheats well. Reheat leftovers in the microwave or in a large skillet or wok.
FAQ:
Is egg roll in a bowl keto friendly?
Yes, it is definitely a low-carb meal solution. However, one thing to consider is the amount of sugar that is in the hoisin sauce. You can easily omit that part of the recipe if you want to keep it even lower in carbs.
Do you put eggs in egg roll in a bowl?
Traditionally, egg rolls do not contain eggs. However, the egg roll wrapper contains egg. I did not include eggs in this recipe but finishing this dish with a cooked egg would be a tasty, protein-filled addition!
