Olive Oil Bread Dip

This post was last updated on September 19, 2024 at 3:56 pm
Take Me to the Recipe

Olive oil bread dip is an herb infused oil mixed with spices and a hint of balsamic vinegar. It is served at your favorite Italian restaurants, now make it at home to enjoy anytime! Serve with bread as an appetizer or use it as a marinade to elevate your favorite dishes.

The pre-dinner bread that is brought out before the meal at a restaurant (especially carrabba's bread dipping oil) is the absolute best, hands down! When you are super hungry and everything on the menu looks and sounds delicious, the bread and dip come out to save the day. Satiate your appetite with olive oil bread dip.

It has become popular in my household. Bread is delicious on its own, or with a schmear of butter, but this dip takes it over the edge. It is the perfect dip to accompany a great loaf of bread during, or before dinner.

Why We Love This Olive Oil Dip Recipe:

Super Simple! It is made with simple ingredients that you probably already have. Prepare this dip in less than five minutes and it will last for months.

Absolutely Delicious! This rich bread dipping oil is herby, savory, garlicky, and slightly salty. Once you start dipping, you will not stop until the last drop has been soaked up with a piece of warm crusty bread.

Perfect for Dinner Parties! Impress your guests with this simple yet elegant appetizer. It is the perfect starter or side dish for pasta too!

Incredibly Versatile! Use it as a marinade on everything from chicken to fish. Drizzle it over salad or add it to pasta. The possibilities are endless!

Ingredients You Need

  • Olive oil: This is the main ingredient so use fresh, good quality olive oil. (It will taste so much better!) I recommend using cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil or the best olive oil you can find.
  • Balsamic Vinegar: This takes the dip to the next level. A little goes a long way.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: For a nice spicy kick.
  • Rosemary: For that herby flavor.
  • Seasoning: Italian seasoning, black pepper, garlic powder, and seasoning salt.

Instructions to make Olive Oil Bread Dip:

Add all of the ingredients to a medium size bowl or jar with a lid, and mix well. Then cover it with an airtight lid. Let the herb infused olive oil bread dip sit for at least 20 minutes to allow all the herbs and spices to infuse into the olive oil.

Alternatives and Variations:

  • Add cheese: Freshly grated parmesan cheese would taste amazing!
  • Less Spicy: Add more herbs to replace the red pepper flakes.
  • Other Herbs: You can use dried or fresh herbs. Try swapping rosemary for parsley or thyme instead.
  • Fresh Garlic: If you plan to serve immediately, you can use fresh garlic cloves instead of garlic powder. However, if you plan to store this for later use, I suggest using garlic powder because it has a longer shelf life.

Storing:

Store leftover herb infused olive oil in a container with an airtight lid and place it in the fridge. It will last for up to 6 months.

This looks like just the sort of simple recipe I'd want to have at my fingertips -- definitely saving for later. I like that there are just enough spices for flavor but not so much as to overwhelm the olive oil.

When I was in Egypt, about 25 years ago, I fell in love with these olive oil dips. They served them with both bread & bread sticks. Gonna have to try this for sure!

Here in Italy restaurants often serve something similar to eat with bread while perusing the menu or waiting for a starter! I've never done it at home though! Such a great idea!

This is my favorite part about some Italian restaurants. I eat my weight in bread and olive oil dip before my food even makes it to the table, lol! It's too hard to resist. I can't wait to make this at home, yum!
