What is Poke Cake?

Poke cake is a baked cake that is poked with holes and then filled with a liquid or sauce for a gooey, moist delicious dessert. Using this method when you bake a cake makes the cake so much more moist and tender.

Ingredients you need:

  • Chocolate cake mix: Use your preferred chocolate cake mix and be sure to grab the other ingredients listed on the box. Alternatively, bake a chocolate cake from scratch.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: Make sure you get this and not evaporated milk.
  • Caramel sauce: Be sure to use sauce and not syrup.
  • Cool whip: You will want to spread a thick layer of this over the surface of the cake.
  • Chopped Heath bar: Use this or a bag of crumbled Heath pieces.

Instructions to make Chocolate Heath Bar Cake:

Bake the Chocolate Cake

Preheat your oven to 350°. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Use a large bowl to mix the cake batter by following the instructions on the box.

Then add the batter to the pre-greased baking dish and bake according to the package instructions.

Add Condensed Milk, Caramel and Heath Candy

Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and use the end of a wooden spoon (or a chopstick, or anything small and round) and begin poking holes all over the hot cake.

Then pour the can of sweetened condensed milk all over the cake, and use a spatula to gently press it down into the holes you poked.

Next, pour the caramel sauce all over and gently smooth it into the holes in the cake. Then sprinkle one cup of the broken heath bar pieces over the top of the cake.

Alternatives and Variations:

  • For even more chocolate, use hot fudge instead of caramel sauce.
  • Swap the chocolate cake for a yellow or vanilla cake.
  • To highlight the salty/sweet combo, you can swap regular caramel sauce for salted caramel sauce.
  • Replace heath bars with Skor bars, Butterfingers, Reese’s, Snickers, or chocolate chips.

Pro-Tips:

  • When pouring the sweetened condensed milk into the holes, tap the pan on the counter several times to ensure the milk fills the holes.
  • Keep the heath bars frozen until you are ready to use them. When frozen, they are easier to break.
  • Serve heath bar poke cake cold. The flavors soak into the cake and the taste is so out of this world!

Storing and Reheating:

Cover the cake with plastic wrap then foil and place it in the fridge for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze for up to 3 months.
