Chicken Legs in the Air Fryer
Air fried chicken legs are one of my favorite things to make when I need something quick and satisfying. These drumsticks come out juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and they cook in half the time it would take in the oven. It's convenient, easy to make in the air fryer, and perfect for busy weeknights.
I use simple ingredients I always have on hand, so there's no need to run to the store. This has quickly become a family favorite, and I know it’ll be the same in your house too.

Ingredients
- Chicken legs (drumsticks): I love using drumsticks because they’re affordable, full of flavor, and the skin crisps up perfectly in the air fryer.
- Avocado oil: This helps the skin get golden and crispy while keeping the meat juicy. You can swap it for olive oil if that’s what you have.
- Seasoning blend: I use a mix of Cajun seasoning, lemon pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and a pinch of seasoned salt. The Cajun brings the heat, the lemon pepper adds a little zing, and the paprika gives it that warm color and flavor we can't get enough of.

How to Cook Chicken Legs in Air Fryer
See recipe card for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

- Step 1: Preheat your air fryer. I set it to 375°F. Then I prep the chicken legs.

- Step 2: Prep the chicken. Add cleaned chicken legs to a large bowl and drizzle with avocado oil, making sure each piece is well coated. Sprinkle seasoning. Toss until the drumsticks are fully coated.

- Step 3: Air fry the chicken. Arrange the chicken legs in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 12 minutes, flip, then cook for another 8 minutes.

- Step 4: Check and serve. The skin should be golden and crispy. Serve hot and enjoy.
How Long to Air Fry Chicken Legs
Chicken legs should be air fried at 375°F for 20 minutes total, flipping halfway through. This gives you crispy skin on the outside and juicy, fully cooked meat on the inside.

Pro Tips
- Preheat your air fryer. Starting with a hot air fryer helps the chicken cook evenly and gives you crispier skin.
- Pat the chicken dry before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps the oil and seasoning stick better and promotes browning.
- Don’t overcrowd the basket. Arrange the drumsticks in a single layer with space between each one so the hot air can circulate properly.
- Flip the chicken halfway through. This ensures the skin crisps up on both sides and the chicken cooks evenly.
- Use a thermometer to check for doneness. Chicken legs are fully cooked when they reach 165°F at the thickest point.
- No thermometer? Cut into one to check. The juices should run clear and the meat should no longer be pink near the bone.

Storage
Store any leftover chicken legs in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer at 350°F for about 5–6 minutes until warmed through and the skin crisps back up. You can also use the microwave, but the skin won’t stay crispy.

Alternatives and Variations
- Chicken: This recipe works best with dark meat. Swap the drumsticks for bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs. You can air fry chicken breasts and chicken wings too but the cooking time will vary.
- Seasoning: Season the chicken however you like. Try adding cayenne pepper, Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, or dried herbs.
- Sauce: Once the chicken is done, you can toss it in sauce if you like. BBQ sauce would be delicious.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks
- Potatoes: Air fryer chicken legs and potatoes are a tasty combo! Try mashed potatoes, fries, or Crispy Smashed Potatoes.
- Veggies: Try brussels sprouts, string beans, asparagus, or collard greens.
- Mac and Cheese: This southern mac and cheese is great for a soul food meal.

FAQ
Can I put raw chicken in the air fryer?
Yes, you can put raw chicken in the air fryer, and it’s perfectly safe when cooked properly. In this recipe, the chicken legs cook at 375°F for a total of 20 minutes, ensuring they’re fully cooked and reach an internal temperature of 165°F. Just make sure to follow the steps for seasoning and flipping to achieve crispy, flavorful results.
Can I use frozen chicken legs?
Yes, but you’ll need to thaw them completely before seasoning and cooking. Frozen chicken won’t absorb the seasoning as well or cook evenly in the air fryer.
Can I marinate the chicken beforehand?
Absolutely! Marinating the chicken in the oil and seasonings for a few hours or overnight will deepen the flavor. Just remember to pat it dry slightly before air frying to ensure crispiness. Try my delicious chicken marinade.
