First things first, chicken and waffles go together okay!? Seriously though, they are truly a special combination. No need to get into the nitty-gritty as to WHY this dynamic duo works, just trust that it does! If you've never tried it, please do so immediately!
There's something special about that crispy fried piece of chicken, and that fluffy waffle. Then add some sweetness from the syrup- it's truly a match made in heaven. Once we tried this combo at a Southern soul food spot, I knew it had to be recreated at home!
Traditionally, red velvet anything is essentially chocolate flavoring, with red food coloring. Seems bizzaar, but there is a sense of romance, or nostalgia tied into the red color of the chocolate cake, or in this case, waffle.
For these red velvet waffles and chicken, I suggest prepping and starting the chicken first. While the chicken is cooking, start preparing the waffles. This will ensure that everything finishes cooking around the same time.
Gather ingredients for the chicken:
- 8-10 Chicken wings, split into drums and flats if desired
- Vegetable oil, for frying
SEASONING/ BREADING
- All purpose flour
- Seasoning salt
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Paprika
- Black pepper
There are two methods that I use for making chicken wings.
One of the more popular methods with chicken and waffles is to fry the chicken. However, when we want to be a little more healthy, I bake my chicken wings, and they are just as crispy and delicious! Both methods are detailed below.
To fry the chicken:
- Heat oil in a cast iron skillet over medium heat (or use a deep fryer). In the meantime, season chicken liberally with all of the seasonings, ensuring to coat evenly.
- Toss the wings in flour mixture to coat evenly. Gently place the wings in hot oil careful not to overcrowd pan.
- Fry wings on each side for 7 minutes, remove them and drain on a rack or paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Let the wings sit for 5 minutes for breading to settle.
To oven bake the chicken:
- Set oven to 375 degrees. Spray a broiler pan (find one here on Amazon), with non-stick cooking spray.
- Season chicken liberally with the seasonings mentioned above.
- Place chicken on broiler pan at least ½ apart from each other (as to not overcrowd the pan).
- Place the pan in the oven. Cook chicken for 20 minutes, remove it and flip each piece. Cook the chicken for an additional 10 minutes.
- Remove the chicken from the oven and allow it to sit for at least 5 minutes before serving.
How to make Red Velvet Waffles:
We like to keep things simple around here, so use a pre-made pancake and waffle mix. Of course they can be made from scratch, but I promise the pre-made mix is just as delicious.
Mix the waffles according to the package instructions. Most pre-made mixes will call for the addition of an egg, and vegetable oil.
Cocao powder and red food coloring are the special addition that help achieve the red velvet flavor. Add a drop of vanilla extract (about ⅛ teaspoon), for another layer of flavor.
Once the waffles are done, serve them with the chicken and dust use a fine mesh strainer to dust the powdered sugar over them. Serve the waffles and chicken with your favorite syrup warmed up.
